Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi to Become New Chief of the Indian Navy


NEW DELHI – Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, a highly decorated officer with a distinguished four-decade career, has been appointed as the next Chief of the Indian Navy. He will take on his new role on April 30th.

Vice Admiral Tripathi brings extensive command and operational experience to this key leadership position. Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he was previously the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1985.

A specialist in communications and electronic warfare, Vice Admiral Tripathi has commanded frontline warships, including the guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai. He's also held strategic posts such as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet and Director of Naval Operations. In recent years, he served as Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy and, crucially, as Director General Naval Operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vice Admiral Tripathi's dedication and expertise have been recognized with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Nausena Medal for devotion to duty. He is known for his keen interest in international relations, military history, and leadership studies.

The incoming Navy Chief is married with one son. Outside of his impressive career, Vice Admiral Tripathi enjoys sports, including tennis, badminton, and cricket.
