US, UK Sanction Iran in Response to Attacks on Israel

WASHINGTON – The United States and the United Kingdom imposed new sanctions on Iran Thursday, targeting individuals and entities involved in Tehran's drone and missile programs. The sanctions are a direct response to Iran's unprecedented assault on Israel, which involved a large-scale drone and missile strike.

The White House condemned the attack as "brazen," emphasizing that the sanctions target those within Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as individuals and companies associated with Iran's missile and drone production.

"We are committed to acting collectively to increase economic pressure on Iran," the White House statement said, highlighting additional sanctions from allies. Iranian leaders retaliated against Israel after a reported Israeli airstrike killed three Iranian generals in Syria.

US President Joe Biden has now sanctioned over 600 Iranian entities and individuals during his presidency, including Iran itself and its regional proxies. The White House underscored the coordinated effort to restrict Iran's military capabilities.

"The United States is committed to Israel's security," the statement continued, "We are committed to the security of our personnel and partners in the region."

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the Iranian strike "reckless" and a "dangerous escalation," also announcing sanctions targeting "the ringleaders of the Iranian military."
