US Greenlights Basler BT-67 Aircraft Sale to Argentina, Countering Chinese Influence

The US government has approved the sale of Basler BT-67 aircraft to Argentina, a move aimed at bolstering the country's airlift capabilities and reducing reliance on aging planes.

The deal, potentially worth up to $143 million, includes comprehensive support and comes amid a broader push by the US to counter China's growing footprint in the region.

This decision follows Argentina's recent acquisition of secondhand Danish F-16 fighter jets with US backing, a choice that effectively closed the door on a potential deal for Chinese-made JF-17s.

The Basler BT-67, a modernized version of the classic Douglas DC-3, offers enhanced capabilities and upgraded avionics.

Details of the Sale

The agreement, authorized under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, includes aircraft delivery, logistics, maintenance, and spare parts.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) emphasizes that the sale will improve Argentina's ability to address current and future threats, particularly through increased airdrop and airlift capacity for Antarctica operations.

Argentina's Aging Fleet

The country's current airlift assets include four Lockheed Martin C-130H tactical transports, two KC-130H tankers, and a single commercial L-100 airlifter, ranging in age from 34 to 55 years old. The BT-67s will alleviate the burden on these older aircraft.

Geopolitical Context

For decades, Argentina has explored options to replace its retired Dassault Mirage fighters, with financial and diplomatic obstacles hindering progress. Both the Indian LCA Tejas and the Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 Block III were considered.

However, the US has actively sought to strengthen its relationship with Argentina as a means to counter China's expanding influence in South America.

China's Perspective

China was optimistic about securing the fighter jet deal with Argentina, highlighting the JF-17 Block-III's advanced capabilities. Ultimately, US intervention, coupled with the offer of F-16s, swayed Argentina's decision.

Additionally, Argentina recently inspected a controversial Chinese space observation facility following requests from the United States.

Conclusion

The sale of Basler BT-67 aircraft, along with the earlier F-16 deal, demonstrates the deepening strategic ties between the US and Argentina. It also serves as a clear example of ongoing US efforts to offset China's growing regional influence.
