IAF Celebrates Milestone with 2500th Overhauled Viper Engine

In a significant achievement, the Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated the release of its 2500th overhauled Viper 22-8 aero engine on April 30th, 2024. The engine powers the Kiran MK I/IA aircraft, a key component in IAF pilot training. The milestone was marked at the Base Repair Depot (BRD) at Air Force Station (AFS) Kanpur.

Air Marshal Vibhas Pande, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of Headquarters Maintenance Command (HQMC), was present to recognize the BRD Kanpur's achievement. He praised the depot's exceptional service since 1974, when it began overhauling Viper engines. The Viper 22-8 is vital for the continued operation of the Kiran MK I/IA jet trainers, which have been the backbone of IAF pilot training for decades.

Reaching the 2500th engine overhaul highlights the expertise of BRD Kanpur personnel. Their dedication ensures a high level of serviceability for IAF assets and allows for uninterrupted training of future pilots. This milestone underscores the IAF's drive towards self-reliance in aero-engine maintenance.

Air Marshal Pande also recommissioned the AN-32 Aircraft Painting Hangar, a unique facility within the IAF.

During his visit, he addressed air warriors, emphasizing the need to adapt to advancements in military technology and the evolving landscape of cyber warfare.

The Air Marshal inaugurated a new recreation room at the Airmen Mess and a re-appropriated canteen, recognizing efforts to improve the quality of life for personnel at AFS Kanpur.

The 2500th Viper engine overhaul is a testament to the Indian Air Force's commitment to maintaining operational readiness and fostering a culture of self-sufficiency within its ranks.

India needs to ditch these ancient engines which are not fuel efficient or long lasting in its range or duration. India needs to start manufacturing the basic and intermediate jet trainer so pilots can train on better quality, reliable and modern planes.
