Indian Navy’s P-8I Aircraft to get upgrades in technology and weaponry

The Indian Navy’s fleet of P-8I aircraft has emerged as a critical asset in monitoring border situations and enhancing maritime security in the region. These versatile aircraft have played a pivotal role in tracking Chinese deployments during the Galwan Valley dispute and monitoring activities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Equipped with advanced technology and weaponry, the P-8I aircraft has proven to be a game-changer in military circles.

The P-8I squadron, stationed at Razali Naval Base in Chennai, consists of eight Poseidon aircraft that were acquired by the Indian Navy in 2013. These aircraft are currently deployed under the designation INAS 312 Albatros.

One of the recent upgrades to the P-8I aircraft involves the integration of anti-ship missiles and torpedoes, significantly enhancing its offensive capabilities. These upgrades enable the aircraft to effectively neutralize enemy warships and submarines, making it a formidable force in maritime warfare.

The P-8I aircraft’s contributions extend beyond maritime surveillance. It also plays a crucial role in ground and air surveillance, espionage, and offensive operations. Equipped with the cutting-edge AN/APY-10 radar system developed by Raytheon, the aircraft boasts powerful beach and underwater monitoring capabilities, even in adverse weather conditions. It can capture detailed images beneath the sea surface, providing valuable intelligence to the Indian Navy.

Since its induction in 2013, the P-8I aircraft has accumulated an impressive 40,000 flying hours, highlighting its reliability and effectiveness in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

Commanding officer Captain AK Singh emphasized the need for additional P-8I aircraft to enhance surveillance capabilities along India’s sea and land borders efficiently. These aircraft are crucial assets for maintaining security and monitoring activities in the region.

With its advanced technology, offensive capabilities, and strategic deployment during border disputes, the P-8I aircraft has proven to be an indispensable tool for the Indian Navy in maintaining maritime security and defending India’s interests in the region.
