Pakistan ‘seriously’ considering reviving trade with India: FM Ishaq Dar

Pakistan’s newly elected Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed “serious intent” of his government to reconsider trade relations with India, a move that would hold pivotal value in a change of policy and position since August 2019, when Islamabad suspended its trade relations in response to New Delhi’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and 35A and revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Pakistani Foreign Minister’s first and most significant statement regarding relations with India came during a press conference in London, where he is present to attend the Nuclear Energy Summit.

Dar highlighted the keen interest of Pakistan’s business community in the revival of trade with India, hinting towards Islamabad’s potential and major shift of diplomatic policy and stance towards its arch-rival and neighbour India.

“We will seriously look into matters of trade with India,” he said while answering a question on Pakistan-India relations.

Dar’s statement seems to be part of the newly formed government’s five-year road map focused on opening economic corridors of trade and business with neighbouring countries including India and paving the way towards economic revival for Pakistan.

Dar said that it was the wrong decisions of the Imran Khan-led government that pushed Pakistan on the verge of an economic collapse, adding that the previous 16-month government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif compromised its political gains and took difficult unpopular decisions to save the country from a financial meltdown.

“Our government would implement a five-year road map to put Pakistan on the road to economic progress and bring down inflation to lessen the economic difficulties of the common man,” he said.

Pakistan’s newly formed government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif looks focused on the prime issue the country faces and seems to be ready to open all possibilities of engagement with important neighbouring countries like India.

Dar’s statement has come at a time when India is moving towards elections and relations with Pakistan would certainly be one of the focus of election campaigning of all political contenders.

While Pakistan is sending out a policy-based proposal for the revival of engagement between the two countries; India has been clear on its approach towards Islamabad, maintaining that it wants Pakistan to take action against extremist terror elements, which have played roles in carrying out terror attacks in India.

India has consistently maintained that Pakistan has not done enough to counter terrorism but has done all to safeguard anti-India groups, people and elements on its soil, keeping it as the top priority for any mode of engagement to materialize between the two countries.

On the other hand, Pakistan keeps the Kashmir dispute as the top priority for table talks with government officials stating that there can be no talks if the Kashmir dispute is not on the agenda.

Experts believe that Dar’s statement may hint towards a probable policy shift on the part of Islamabad, but any further movement on it would require more work and consideration from both sides.

No absolutely no way at all.

We do not need your chemical drugs and brown sugar heroin/cocaine, illegal arms and ammunition, fake currency, etc to ruin our fast progressing country.
One time, a lorry driver transporting brown sugar cocaine claimed diplomatic immunity against seizing his lorry and arresting him on drug charges.
Crazy fellas.

Get lost and your country is on the brink of falling into pieces.

"Considering" 🤣🤣😍🤣.. real jokers.. bhai tumhara Army ka dukaan band ho jayega. Take permission from them 1st.. 😅😅

Stop all your nefarious activities. Dismantle your terror camps. Handover wanted terrorist to India . Then we can talk about Trade.
You can't have gun in one hand and Rose in another hand.

But honestly india has absolutely no interest. Blood and trade cannot continue. You support , fund and train the terrorists and expect India to help you. First pay the money you owed to India for buying medicines.

Trade what , other than terrorists. All Pakistan will plan to start talks and then follow up with terrorism. Pakistan is among most incompetent and shameless country

We can resume trade relations with them.... But first and foremost, Pakistan has to pass a resolution in their National Assembly that Art 370 & 35A were India's internal matters and that entire Kashmir belongs to India. After all...isn't that the issue on which Pakistan broke off trade relations in the first place?

So, if they're having a U-turn of their policy, then let it be a public U-turn.

Else, we're not in any way interested to resume any sort of trade, commercial, social or sports relations.

Many ppl will not understand that ISI is already working on eliminating India centric terror leadership (that unknown gunmen) to convince India that Pak is serious to mend ways with India looking at Taliban as their long term existential enemy in the future. Handing over terrorists to India would be face loss to Pak ISI in front of their own ppl and international community. ISI is already working on a long term coorporation with India to help India eliminate internal terror network like PFI, terror Infra at border as base for trade and economic cooperation. Kashmiri separatist have also understood all this change in ISI strategy. More surprises will come in months to come as Pakistan face heat on Afg border. Infact India would be helping Pakistan in couple of years to break into pieces but to survive as a viable buffer zone between India and Afg.

Return of every inch of POJK< Gilgit and Baltistan is a MUST CONDITION.

Let them at least give MFN status even before talking and handover POK. We can then talk trade

I agree that Pak fauz's present top leadership might be in favour of toning down its terror focused tool kit against India. Actually it started with their former chief Bajwa ( who served under our former Chief Gen Bikram Singh in a peace keeping mission in Africa when he was a Brigadier and and indicator of Bajwa's thought process was available from his informal conversations to Indian officers posted there). But we cannot trust Pak establishment because it is not a monolithic entity. ISI often acts as an independent unit without GHQ approvals. The Jihadi Tanzeem's handlers become semi-independent and devise own plans without knowledge of even ISI bosses. And, more importantly, anti-Indianism is so ingrained in all layers of their society ( officers are part of society after all), that any such effort to tone down terror as a tool of their India policy will have to be taken with a grain of salt.

I agree, Indian establishment is not trusting them. They are only evaluating what ISI is delivering and base of that India will give benefit them on trade, border ceasefire and not pushing hard on international forums like IFTA etc. Trust me current government will extract way more then they give in return and roll back everything the moment Pakistan goes back on delivery. Complete collapse of Pakistan is not in our interest as there will be spillover to India just like pre 1971 Bangladesh

Trade with Pakistan means funding ISI terrorism and drug activities in India. There is absolutely no need for any trade with Pakistan. For trade with Afghanistan, we should use only Chabhar port.

Nope, nothing should move forward until Pakistan reigns in terrorism and drug-trade from pakistan into India and other Asian nations.

Every India-pakistan "talk" should be hyphenated with countering pakistani-terrorism, only that and nothing else. Fix it first, then anything moves forward, because India has learnt its lesson being diplomatic with pakistan, i.e. India tries and the pakistan army initiates a terrorist attack to halt the talks, eg Parliament attacks, 26/11, etc.

So the ball is pakistan's court.

Is India left with any option not to seriously consider reviving trade with Pakistan? Or is India bound to obey ishaq dar's order?

Pakistan can revive trade with USA. US is badly in need of thousands of jihadists.

If Pakistan is facing heat on Afghan border, India should put more heat from this side. Let Pakistan face heat from both sides and perish.
