Defence Minister’s statement that Agniveer scheme needs changes shows the initiative has failed: Mallikarjun Kharge

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement that the Agniveer scheme needs changes and improvement indicates that the scheme thrust on lakhs of patriotic youth has failed, said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday.

Kharge said on X that the Modi government played with the future of lakhs of youth but is now talking of the scheme’s shortcomings before the elections. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday that his government is “open to change” in the Agniveer recruitment scheme if necessary.

Kharge urged the government to apologise to millions of youth for playing with their future.

“First, the Modi government played with the future of our millions of youth, and now, due to electoral reasons, they are talking about acknowledging the flaws in the Agniveer scheme. They should apologise to our patriotic youth before anyone else,” Mallikarjun Kharge said.

The Congress party has promised that our government will shut down the Agniveer scheme.

According to Kharge, the Agnipath scheme has weakened national security and now no youth wants to join the army for just four years.

Highlighting the success of the “Jai Jawan” campaign launched by the Congress party, Malikarjun emphasized the plight of nearly 1.5 lakh young men and women who were denied opportunities due to the Agniveer scheme.

“After passing rigorous selection processes, between 2019 and 2022, a regular recruitment campaign was accepted into our 3 prestigious military forces–the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, because the Modi government abruptly imposed the Agnipath scheme on the armed forces,” the tweet added.
Due to this recruitment scheme, future Agniveers are highly dissatisfied and directionless due to the damage to prestige and economic security, said Kharge.

Kharge further said that former Chief of Army Staff (retired) General MM Naravane said that the Agniveer scheme was originally intended to take in 75pc of applicants and release 25pc.

“The Modi government reversed this, and forcefully implemented this scheme on all three military forces,” said Kharge.

Malikarjun concluded the tweet by condemning the BJP for jeopardising the future of the country’s youth and urging voters to reject their electoral rhetoric.

“The country’s awakened youth will reject the BJP’s electoral rhetoric! The BJP is guilty of darkening their future,” said Kharge.

The recruits named Agniveers serve for a tenure of four years that includes training for six months followed by 3.5 years of deployment. After retirement from the service, they will have the opportunity to apply to continue in the armed forces.

As announced, the ‘Agnipath’ or ‘Agniveer’ scheme is a process for recruiting soldiers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, to be hired for a term of four years on contract.

Speaking at the Times Now Summit, the Union Minister also said that the government has ensured that the future of the Agniveers is secure.

Asserting that youthfulness is necessary in the defence forces, Singh also defended the scheme, and said, “Sena mein youthfulness honi chahiye. The youth, I feel, are more enthusiastic. They are more tech-savvy. We have taken proper care that their future is also secure. We will also make changes if there is a need.”

THEY DONT HAVE ba**s to come up with any POLICY -BUT- CRITICIZE EVERYTHING OTHERS CREATE

It was kind of half baked to begin with many disadvantages too especially over the longer term.

Agni veer scheme is bound to be a failure. It’s not well planned. Govt should immediately pause it and go back to the drawing board.

It shows that they are amenable to correction. It is natural that anything planned on board and actually being implemented rarely give the anticipated results. And that is why modification is made. This is scientific.

Agnipath scheme is working perfectly. People are taking too much interest in it. What Defense minister said is if there is any changes required, it will be done.

Agniveer scheme was necessary to reduce pension burden which had become insurmountable after implementation of OROP. The current ratio of military pensioners to serving military personnel is 1.7 to 1. In comparison, the ratio of civil pensioners to civil work force is 0.56 to 1.

We should have a policy of absorbing the retd defence personal in the police and paramilitary, as is the custom in many countries, including in China, and in advanced economies like S Korea, Singapore, Israel, Switzerland, and the United States.

But we have not done so as to create a civil military separation. There is an argument that this has prevented military coups, which are common in our neighbouring countries of pakis and myanmaar. Police and paramilitary come under Home ministry and military comes under defence ministry.

Someone tell this idiot that if something requires tweaking, it doesn't mean the idea was bad to start with.

How will having paramilitary and police absorb ex military ppl create coup risk?

Para military like BSF, CRPF, ITBP comes under control of Home Ministry. So does the police. Even RAW, and intelligence bureau has police officers in it rather than military officers. In pakistan, ISI has military officers, the paramilitary is the rangers, they also come under army. The military controls too much power.

In India effort was made after independence to reduce the power military controls. If tomorrow the army general decides to launch a coup, lets say even the air force and navy joins them. We will have RAW,IB, and the paramilitary who come under home minister who will not join them. Because they dont take orders from the military. If paramilitary has army soldiers, then they would have loyalty to the army.

Yeah and continue to bleed budget in salaries and income leaving peanuts for defence modernization.

There is a reason most modern nations have either of "tour of duty" or "mandatory conscription" schemes to supplement manpower for their respective militaries, depending on their situation.

But if we implement any progressive schemes in India, people believe in throwing the bathtub out with baby.

Similar thing happened with the progressive farm law reforms which was the need for monetizing agriculture and incentivise Industrial scales, but alas. That did not float with public.

The citizen of this country deserve socialsim and license raj only. Bencho sab ko subsidy par jeena aata hai bas.

US has a version of "Tour of duty" which is scheme similar to Agniveer and their paramilitary strength is nowhere near what we have here in India. How many coups have you seen happening in the US since WW2 when this has been practice?

Your assumption that having people with military experience will increase chances of political coup has its source in figment of some Congressi's imagination.

Political point scoring? Every new scheme needs improvements - doesn't mean it has failed.
