Philippines' BrahMos Missile Acquisition Strengthens Defense Posture, Ambassador Cites Deterrence Against Chinese Aggression

The Philippines' recent purchase of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles marks a significant step forward for the nation's defense capabilities, says Ambassador Josel Francisco Ignacio.

In an exclusive interview with WION, Ignacio emphasized that the missiles provide "credible deterrence" against increasing tensions with China in the disputed West Philippine Sea/South China Sea.

India-Philippines Relations: Ambassador Ignacio highlighted the growing partnership between India and the Philippines, describing it as going "on turbo." He noted intensified high-level visits and a shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and regional peace and security. Ignacio expressed hope for increased Indian tourism in the Philippines and the establishment of direct flights between the countries.

BrahMos Milestone: Ignacio described the $375 million BrahMos deal, a joint venture between India and Russia, as a "milestone" for the Philippines' defense modernization efforts. He emphasized the missiles' role in enhancing the nation's defense posture and providing a stronger deterrent.

South China Sea Tensions: The ambassador reiterated the Philippines' commitment to upholding its legal rights and entitlements in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea. He condemned China's use of water cannons and other forceful tactics against Philippine vessels, calling them "legally baseless, aggressive actions."

Grateful for India's Support: Ignacio expressed gratitude for India's consistent position in supporting the 2016 arbitral award that ruled in favor of the Philippines' claims in the South China Sea dispute. He highlighted the growing international support for the Philippines' stance.

Philippines' Response & Transparency: Despite Chinese pressure, the ambassador asserted that the Philippines will not back down from exercising its rights in the region. He underscored the country's ongoing transparency campaigns to expose China's actions to the international community.

The Philippines' acquisition of the BrahMos missiles, along with strengthening partnerships with countries like India, signal its determination to defend its sovereignty amid escalating regional pressures. The nation continues to pursue peaceful, legal, and diplomatic means to resolve maritime disputes while actively modernizing its defense capabilities.
