India's Defence Ambitions Soar: Tripling Production and Doubling Exports by 2028-29

India's defence industry stands at a transformational juncture as the government outlines a bold vision for domestic manufacturing and a strengthened position within the global arms market.

In a testament to the nation's aspirations, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has projected India's annual defense production to reach a remarkable INR 3 lakh crore by 2028-29. This vision aligns with the overarching goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.

Domestic Production and Exports: Cornerstones of Growth

The government's blueprint for this expansion emphasizes a multi-pronged approach. Central to this strategy is a near tripling of domestic defense production by 2028-29, reaching the INR 3 lakh crore mark. This underscores the commitment to reduce reliance on imported defense equipment and empower India's manufacturing capabilities.

In parallel, the government has set forth an equally ambitious trajectory for defense exports. India seeks to more than double its current exports of INR 21,083 crore to INR 50,000 crore by 2028-29. This expansion would not only bolster India's economy but also cultivate strategic partnerships with nations worldwide who value its defense technologies.

From Importer to Innovator: The Self-Reliance Push

India's remarkable surge in defense exports – from under INR 1,000 crore to INR 16,000 crore – signals the nation's growing prominence as a global arms exporter.

Underlying these achievements is the unwavering focus on 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India). Annual domestic defense production has surpassed INR 1 lakh crore, reflecting India's determination to become a manufacturing powerhouse.

The Ministry of Defense, allocated INR 6.2 lakh crore in the 2024-25 budget, plays a pivotal role in realizing these goals. With capital acquisitions exceeding INR 4.3 lakh crore, India prioritizes the procurement of locally produced weapons systems and technologies.

This commitment to domestic industry extends to initiatives such as positive indigenization lists, where 75% of the capital acquisition budget is dedicated to local procurement.

Fostering Innovation and Joint Operations

To ensure India's long-term security, the government prioritizes technological research and a collaborative approach among its armed forces. Defense startups are recognized as key drivers of innovation; the Defense Ministry has recently unveiled measures to promote and support startups in the sector.

These measures, including liberalized procedures and payment terms, aim to unlock the potential of cutting-edge defense startups in shaping India's future capabilities.

Defense Minister Singh emphasized the importance of 'jointness' among India's Army, Navy, and Air Force for effective crisis response. This underscores a strategic shift towards integrated operations to meet the challenges of contemporary warfare.

Looking Ahead

India is confident in its ability to produce technologically advanced systems, such as aero-engines and gas turbines, within the next five years.

The government's unwavering support and ambitious targets are poised to propel India as a global leader in defense manufacturing, strengthening its economic growth and strategic influence in the years to come.

India can surely become a major armaments exporter in the world and it already started with exports of Brahmos to Philippines, and Pinaka, Howitzers, Swathi weapons locating radars, etc to Armenia, etc

Only golden era awaits Indian armaments industry and GoI must encourage it in every which way it can.
