  • Even as India looks to bolster its defence preparedness in the eastern sector, vis-a-vis China, the Indian Air Force (IAF) Eastern Command has launched a military exercise code-named “Pralay” (destruction). India is taking care to strengthen its defences in the eastern sector despite efforts by India and China to resolve bilateral disputes.

Even as Chinese foreign minister is on a visit to India, the recent Chinese objections to defence minister A.K. Antony’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh has shown India that it cannot be complacent on its security in the eastern sector.
Mr Antony is also scheduled to soon “hand over” the first batch of the indigenously-designed and developed surface-to-air missile “Akash” — billed as an equivalent to the Patriot missile — to the IAF at Hyderabad. Two squadrons of the Akash missiles (about 32 in number) could be inducted soon. India is also strengthening ties with Southeast Asian nations and the Indian and Indonesian armies on Thursday concluded a week-long joint military exercise in northeastern India.

“The IAF’s Eastern Air Command commenced exercise codenamed ‘Pralay’ on February 29 in the... eastern region of India. The exercise involves joint Army air operations by the IAF’s Eastern Air Command and Eastern Command of the Indian Army. This is an annual exercise aimed at testing the combat potential of the Air Force in various roles such as air defence, ground support operations, counter-air operations, electronic warfare, and joint operations with the Army including special operations by day and night.”
